Runme.org is a software art repository, launched in January 2003. It is an open, moderated database to which people are welcome to submit projects they consider to be interesting examples of software art. Software art is an intersection of two almost non-overlapping realms: software and art. It has a different meaning and aura in each. Software art gets its lifeblood and its techniques from living software culture and represents approaches and strategies similar to those used in the art world. Software culture lives on the Internet and is often presented through special sites called software repositories. Art is traditionally presented in festivals and exhibitions. Software art on the one hand brings software culture into the art field, but on the other hand it extends art beyond institutions.

REPOhistory began as a study group of artists, scholars, teachers, and writers focused on the relationship of history to contemporary society. We choose to create public art because we wanted to expand the audience for art by going outside the confines of the museum and gallery structure. By choosing to create work with strong, alternative social commentary we are drawing on a tradition in art that is often ignored; the legacy of the Berlin Dadaists, Russian Constructivists, the New York Photo League and contemporary organizations like Political Art Documentation/Distribution (PAD/D), Group Material and Grand Fury.

J.S.G. Boggs is an artist who has consistently employed the image of money in his art since 1984, when he first accidentally “spent” a drawing of a one-dollar bill. More recently he intentionally printed and “spent” 900 one-dollar Boggs-Bills which he “paid” to the organizer of a coin collectors convention, Florida United Numismatists (F.U.N.) Inc. F.U.N. then “paid” the Boggs-Bills to staff members and to a trade journal, Bank Note Reporter, for a full-page advertisement. The madness seems to have been contagious, for Bank Note Reporter then started handing them out as “change” to people who then went out and “spent” them in the greater world of the public-at-large...

- My goal is to tell a story in an altogether new way -- by allowing
the user to move through a story, to "happen" upon a scene, and to find
his or her own meaning in this ever-enacted place. In some versions,
users can then leave their mark and become part of the story--leave
hints, impressions, etc--for the next viewer. This residue becomes part
of the world, ready for the next user to discover.

<nettime> is not just a mailing list but an effort to formulate an international, networked discourse that neither promotes a dominant euphoria (to sell products) nor continues the cynical pessimism, spread by journalists and intellectuals in the 'old' media who generalize about 'new' media with no clear understanding of their communication aspects. we have produced, and will continue to produce books, readers, and web sites in various languages so an 'immanent' net critique will circulate both on- and offline.

Tactical Media are what happens when the cheap 'do it yourself' media, made possible by the revolution in consumer electronics and expanded forms of distribution (from public access cable to the internet) are exploited by groups and individuals who feel aggrieved by, or excluded from, the wider culture. Tactical Media do not just report events; as they are never impartial, they always participate and it is this that more than anything separates them from mainstream media.

On the other hand the Museum serves the general public by providing the visitor a hands-on experience of "life in the Jurassic"....more==>
Use of the Net beyond its one necessary function (i.e., information gathering), is a highly developed anti-social form of interacting. That someone would want to stay in his or her home or office and reject human contact in favor of a textually mediated communication experience can only be a symptom of rising alienation, not a cure for it. Why the repressive apparatus would want this isolation to develop is very clear: If someone is online, he or she is off the street and out of the gene pool. In other words, they are well within the limits of control. Why the marketing apparatus would desire such a situation is equally clear: The lonelier people get, the more they will have no choice but to turn to work and to consumption as a means of seeking pleasure...more==>

Early in the next millenium your left and right cuff links or earrings may communicate with each other by low-orbiting satellites and have more power than your PC." Have you ever wondered what your earrings would say to each other if they could have a confidential conversation? I have to confess I hadn't.
